Minutes

1. Bath Package

Major project to put in E-W bus links between park and ride sites at Newbridge and Lambridge
First phase Newbridge to Pines Way – following old railway for first section. Opportunity for cycles to share bus routes. Would become route of choice when cycling from railway path towards city centre.

Discussion of best way to incorporate cycles with pedestrian / bus traffic. General feeling was that choice of sharing pedestrian / cycle path or using road would be of most benefit to range of cyclists.

Could look for advice from CE / Sustrans on shared access – cycle / pedestrian.

2. Western Riverside

Project likely to get govt. go-ahead soon. Plans illustrate that site itself is permeable to cycle traffic, but has no through routes for motor vehicles. Would be good to get first phase to include better cycle access between Victoria Bridge and the riverside path (NCN 4).

Possibly talk to (pro-cycling) architects – Fielden, Clegg and Bradley

3. Rossiter Road

Malcolm met with Steve Frogett. Plan at early stage to make Rossiter Rd 2-way with Widcombe Rd remaining 1-way. Cyclists not really thought of.

Gyratory to become light controlled with Southgate project. No good route to rail station from south. Several ideas to improve this. Refer making it legal to cycle over ha'penny bridge to Alison Sherwin.

4. Access to Station

Station to be redeveloped and linked to new bus station in 2009. Problem with cycle access to platform nearest to city. Will apparently have lift access. Could be difficult to access with bikes. Will stations have improved cyele parking. Will it be secure? Will tunnels be accessible for cyclists?

Nigel to write to Andrew Haines (First Great Western). Aim to arrange meeting (include Mike and Stephen)

5. Bath Cycling Summit

Support from Cllr Gerrish for partnership event. BANES will fund venue. Officer support. Don Foster agreed to chair. Dates 13 or 20 June.

Our aims: Celebration, Inspiration, Joining together, Moving forward

John Grimshaw interested could make 20th. Health related speaker – Alison Hill?

Need to organise sponsorship and publicity – help requested. Will open invite to next planning meeting.

6. Joint Liason meeting – Public Domain

Stephen George spoke on Public Realm – cycling completely ignored – has agreed to come to cycle sub group meeting tomorrow (22 Jan). Will be a chance to introduce some ideas to him. Eg
- Through routes N-S and E-W
- Advantage for cycling
- Design for cycling
- Default contraflow cycling in 1-way streets
- "Pedestrain areas" – continental model of shared use
