Bath Public Realm and Movement Strategy
Stephen George delivered a presentation to the last Joint Liaison group meeting. Cycling didn’t appear to get a mention, but Stephen did agree to come to this meeting. He appeared to be aware of cycling issues and responded well to our comments.
There was much discussion about the principles involved. Everyone agreed areas currently considered as pedestrian should be free access to cyclists. Segregation was generally thought to be unhelpful in these areas. Signing should be kept to a minimum, preferring to make the design suggest appropriate behaviour.
Cycle routes into and through the city centre were considered. We were keen to have North-South and East-West routes identified.
How to handle a cycle through-route crossing a heavily used pedestrian area was considered. The example we looked at is the East-West route Lower Borough Walls - Old Orchard Street (formerly a cycle lane) crossing the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Southgate-Stall Street. The previous situation here had worked well, without too much clutter or signage. The use of different levels and surfaces was considered.
Southgate Development and Access to Bath Spa Station
Alison had spoken to the station manager. Cycle parking is to be moved from Northern platform and replaced by an equal amount outside the station. It was suggested that there could be more spaces on other side using what is now covered car parking. Malcolm asked whether we could invite Station manager to next meeting.
Alison and Stephen will speak to Southgate developers who they believe can make the decisions.
